Last year more 2,019,750 read the same book, Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, aloud simultaneously.

The Jumpstart campaign hopes to break that record on Thursday, October 7, 2010, when Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day will be read around the world to raise awareness of the crisis to early literacy. The Read for the Record Web site features a plethora of resources for classroom teachers and librarians—activities, reproducibles, posters and fact sheets. Community involvement is encouraged, and there is information about how to turn Read for the Record from a one-day event to a multiweek project. Read for the Record is sponsored by Jumpstart and the Pearson Foundation.
